Lake houses ask more of an interior than most homes: wet feet and sunscreen, strong western light off the water, humidity, and furniture that has to work for both a quiet weeknight and a full weekend dock party. Emerald & Oak Design works on custom homes, renovations and new construction where those decisions are made early, alongside the architecture.
The strongest lake interiors defer to the view — window treatments that control glare without closing the room, a palette drawn from the shoreline, performance fabrics, and lighting layered so the room still feels right after the sun goes down over the water.

Designing interiors for lake living
Lake interiors work hardest of any in the region: strong reflected light, humidity, wet swimsuits and a house that swings from quiet weeknights to full weekends. The most successful rooms defer to the water rather than competing with it.
Plan glare control, performance fabrics, washable finishes near doors to the dock, and layered lighting that holds the room together after sunset. Decisions are cheapest when they are made alongside the architecture, not after it.
Before you commit
- ◆Map where afternoon glare lands before choosing window treatments
- ◆Specify performance fabrics for seating near the water
- ◆Design a mudroom or drop zone for boat and pool gear
- ◆Layer lighting so rooms work after dark, not just at sunset
